Plantar Wart Removal Surgery
At Orange County Foot & Ankle Surgery, Dr. Matt Ahmadi performs plantar wart removal surgery. Even though plantar warts are typically not harmful and eventually go away on their own, they can cause irritation on the skin. Plantar wart removal surgery can offer some relief and also improve self-esteem if the wart is unsightly.
What are plantar warts?
Plantar warts are skin growths (don’t worry, they are not cancerous). They are caused by an infection in the top layer of skin – a strain of human papillomavirus (HPV). The warts are typically small, but can grow to become larger, or even grow in clusters. It’s not uncommon to see small black dots in the wart, which are blood vessels that have grown up into it. Plantar warts are sometimes mistaken for corns or calluses.
Plantar warts are spread from one individual to another. The transmission can even be indirect, like going barefoot on the same surface as someone with a wart.
How are plantar warts treated?Even though many plantar warts go away on their own after some time, others can spread or become painful. They can also be a source of embarrassment. Sometimes, medications (both over-the-counter and prescription strength) are used as treatment. These medications can involve the use of salicylic acid or other active ingredients. Cryotherapy can also be used to freeze the wart off.
Plantar wart removal surgery can involve a variety of methods, including shaving the surface of the wart off, using an electric needle to destroy the wart, or using laser treatment to cauterize small blood vessels. This latter method causes the infected tissue to die and the wart to fall off.
The method that is best for you might depend on several factors, including the exact location of your wart and how long it has been present. Your foot doctor in Orange County will help you determine the best method for wart removal.
How can I prepare for the surgery?
The way that you need to prepare for your surgery depends on the exact type of procedure that you are having. We will provide you with instructions that you need to follow relating to foot care, medication use, and anything else that you need to be aware of before the surgery. Be sure that you follow these instructions carefully to make sure that everything goes smoothly. Your foot surgeon will also make sure that you have provided all of the information about your current medical condition and medical history. The surgery to remove a plantar wart isn’t major, so you are likely to be back to normal activities in no time at all.
