If you are suffering from an ingrown toenail, you are likely looking for a quick way to relieve the pain and help your nail to grow normally again. Pain from an ingrown toenail is often excruciating and can make it painful to walk or wear shoes. At Orange County Foot & Ankle, we can offer ingrown nail treatments and also provide you with some tips regarding how to treat an ingrown nail at home.
An ingrown nail occurs when the nail grows into the surrounding flesh rather than on top of it. They occur most frequently on the big toe, although they can happen anywhere. If it is not treated, it can lead to permanent changes in the skin in the area and infection. You are more likely to experience an ingrown toenail if your nails are curved or thick.
- Improper footwear – Shoes that crowed your toes and toenails can cause ingrown nails. Improper shoes can include shoes that are too tight, too short, and too narrow. Socks that fit tightly can be a culprit as well.
- A toenail injury – Dropping an object on your toe, or even kicking an object or stubbing your toe accidentally, can lead to an ingrown toenail.
- Excessive sweating – If the skin on your toes is frequently moist and warm, it could increase your chances of developing an ingrown toenail.
- Cutting your toenails wrong – If you cut your toenails to be too short or cut your toenails on a curve instead of straight across, it can cause the skin around the nail to fold over it.
Knowing how your ingrown toenail formed is a good way to prevent it from happening again in the future, and to help you know how to treat an ingrown nail.
How can I prevent an ingrown toenail?
Once you have learned how to treat an ingrown nail, the next step is knowing how to prevent them so you aren’t left dealing with the painful condition again. Unfortunately, once you have an ingrown toenail, your risks of experiencing one again go up.
You can help to prevent ingrown toenails by trimming your toenails straight across rather than curved, like the shape of your toe. You can even ask your podiatrist to show you how to trim your toenails if you are not sure how to do it correctly. Make sure that you never let your toenails grow too long or trim them too short. They should be even with the tips of your toes.
Make sure that your shoes fit you properly and are not too tight or restrictive. If you work in a place where you could injure your feet, wear protective footwear. If you are prone to ingrown toenails, check your feet regularly and contact our office at the first sign of any problems.
