Do I need Orthotics?

Not too many of us have perfect feet, so chances are neither do you! But not having a perfect foot does not necessarily mean that your feet will require attention. Let’s start by figuring out what kind of foot you have, and then we will see what kind of attention it needs, if any.

Pronated Feet: When standing, pronation occurs as the foot rolls inwards and the arch of the foot flattens, hense the term often used to describe someone who over pronates as having ‘flat feet’. Pronation is a normal part of the gait cycle which helps to provide shock absorption at the foot.

Flat Feet: if you thought you had pronated feet but realized when you lifted up your foot that you did not even have an arch, then you have flat feet, and real ones!

Supinated Feet: Supination is roughly the opposite of pronation. Supination involves a lifting of the arch and a tilting to the outside. Supinated feet are often referred to as cavus (high arched) feet. This is not a common foot type. People who wear out the outside of their heels are not necessarily supinators. Supinators often sprain their ankles and are generally unstable while walking.

High Arch: High arches can lead to foot problems. When describing foot structure or type, the opposite extreme from a flat foot is the high-arched foot. A high-arched foot lacks the needed flexibility for absorbing shock and tends to roll outward or supinate, which can increase the risk of ankle sprains. Also known as a pes cavus deformity or a cavus foot type

Neutral or Normal Foot: your foot looks exactly the same whether it is up in the air or down on the ground. The wearing pattern on your sole probably starts from the middle or the outside of the heel and slowly moves to the middle of the foot, or slightly to the inside.
